Searching for a Single Quotes in SQL
How to search for a single quote in a SQL Server string

Binnocular Man

We are starting a new section for SQL Server tips. We still plan to have Crystal Reports tips as they come up, but we thought this would be useful to our readers.

Recently we needed to work with customer ID's and names in Dynamics GP and needed to know the proper syntax to search for single quotes within a string.  For example, if you wanted to find all customer names starting with O'Brien, how would you do this in SQL?

The answer is to use two single quotes in place of the single quote in your string.  So for the example above, the search would look like the following:

select * from RM00101 where CUSTNAME like 'O''Brien%'

Note that there are two single quotes between the O and the B.

Conditional Actions in SSRS
How to dynamically use different actions in SSRS

Expressions are so handy for providing advanced functionality and formatting in your reports.

We recently worked on a report where we wanted to provide conditional drilldown capability to one or more reports depending on the value in a field, and this is super easy by doing the following:
  1. Right-click on your textbox and choose Properties.
  2. In 2005, click on the Navigation tab and select the "Jump to Report" radio button.  Or in 2008, click on the Action tab and select the "Go to Report" radio button.
  3. Click on the fx button and enter the following expression:
=iif(Fields!MYFIELD.Value="value","Report1","Report2")

You can also modify the expression to something like this if you want to either jump to a report or not navigate at all:

=iif(Fields!MYFIELD.Value="value","Report1",Nothing)

This technique can also be used for Bookmark or URL actions, and you can use a SWITCH statement to provide more options.
